English Country Living
Interior Design Specialising in the Country Look
The English country house style is what Lucinda was brought up with. It is a timeless look that lasts through generations. It’s a layered style where items all have a history and patina to them. It is always inviting and comfortable and nothing is too precious.
One of the advantages of the country living style is that it doesn’t follow trends. It’s an adaptable look that can easily be updated and added to, but the core can remain the same.
The English country living look is incredibly desirable and versatile, and not limited to the countryside. Lucinda has completed many houses both in London and abroad with this specification.

English country living as a look is a timeless style that evokes the essence of rural life in the English countryside. It is a blend of rustic elegance, cosy comfort, and natural materials, creating a functional and welcoming environment that feels like a retreat away from it all.
There is a degree of informality to the country aesthetic where it doesn’t take itself too seriously; decorator Mark Hampton called it the undecorated, decorated look. This is what makes the country living such a great style for family living - especially when there is a dog or two around!
The English country house style has an element of informality to it where finishes don’t necessarily have to match, and are quite often chosen for that very reason. This adds another layer to the design of a room and can make it both more interesting and comfortable.
One of the fantastic things about the country living style is that every look is unique. However, there are a few elements of the country style that give it its character.
What is the English Country look?
Natural Materials
Natural elements are often seen through the English country style. Wood brings warmth from floors or wooden ceiling beams. Stones used in fireplaces or flagstone floors speak of long tradition of such building materials. Wicker or rattan is another element often seen - furniture or storage baskets made of natural materials may be used if appropriate for an earthy, traditional touch.
Antiques & Decorations
Antiques scattered throughout the house is an essential element. These items help to ground a scheme and give the feeling of history and patina. However it is also important to have contemporary items mixed in, to avoid a slightly stayed and stale feeling. Lucinda recommends any modern AV systems (television, speakers, routers etc) to be hidden away as much as possible.
Cosy textiles, such as soft, knitted throws and woollen blankets, provide warmth and comfort, while layered rugs in natural fibres like wool or jute add texture.
Bringing Nature Inside
Nature-inspired decor is an important element often seen, with fresh seasonal flowers in vases or jars to bring the outdoors inside. Potted plants and herbs enhance the natural, organic feel.
Natural light is key, with large windows and doors to allow sunlight to flood the interior.
Colours & Lighting
The colour palette depends very much on the project, but often pastels shades are incorporated into the overall design. Florals are another element that are very much at home in the English country house style. However, these don’t necessarily need to be the big blousy florals of Sibyl Colefax and John Fowlers time. Florals can be used in upholstery from curtain and cushions, to wallpapers or botanical prints.
When it comes to lighting, soft lighting is key, with lots of low-level lamps and gathered fabric lampshades. The aim to create an inviting, comfortable feel that is ready to step into.
